The aim of PureMaths Tuition

PureMaths is a home based online tuition that goes much beyond normal tuition, and yet, with the lowest tuition fee for such quality. It provides pre-recorded tutorial lessons, highly experienced and qualified tutor when needed, comprehensive text reference book, progress monitoring and free first lesson.

Video Tutorial Lessons were developed by a tutor with over 35 years of experience in teaching/tutoring high school mathematics with an outstanding success with thousands of students. He was, also, helping to hundreds of other tutors and teachers and he is the author of several mathematics books and about 400 hours of mathematics video lessons. The purpose of his video lessons is not only to improve student’s knowledge but also to develop students’ study ability and to enhance their educational potential, enabling them, to go beyond their desired result. The other aim is to eliminate, or to reduce, hours of face-to-face tutoring and by that to engage students to study independently as much as possible. By reducing dependency from tutor students rise confidence in their knowledge, and consequently, reduce stress level on their exams and assessments, leading in scoring better marks. Studying with our tutorial lessons is like students have a tutor with them at any time, but still, they can choose their convenient time, pace, and style to study. Students have unlimited access to lessons throughout school year without any extra costs and they can repeat whole lesson or any part of the lesson whenever they need, and they can expect:

  • To get knowledge of the highest standard in the fastest time.
  • To understand and memorise even the most complex concepts in an easy way because most of the concepts are broken down into simple steps and constantly revised with each session.
  • To develop a high ability to apply theoretical knowledge and concepts while solving questions.
  • To extend educational ability and to increase motivation as they will discover that studying is not such hard work.
  • To develop critical thinking skills and a scientific approach to problem solving. And many more other benefits.

One-to-one online personal tutor on demand is available for up to 1hr. on each hour of subscribed video lessons. The tutor is graduated professional with more than 10 years of tutoring experience. His tutoring approach is the same as Video Maths Tutor’s approach. He was formal Video Maths Tutor’s student during his high school years.

Tutorial Books are another great study recourse by this tutor and content of those books is the same as contents of video lessons. The purpose of those books is for quicker revision or searching for some forgotten concepts or critical questions. Also, if printed, books can be an excellent bound reference material for exam.

Progress monitoring is an option to students who would like to take an assessment on every 20 hours of video lessons. The benefit of this option is our feedback with advice and directions on how to continue. This is free, and we encourage students to take it, especially those who don’t take one-to-one classes.

 About pre-recorded video tutorial lessons

There are about 80 to 90 hours (depending of year level) video tutorial lessons accessible online. Lessons are organised by chapters and each chapter by tutorial sessions. The author of video lessons is a tutor with over 35 years of tutoring experience with an outstanding tutoring success with thousands of students. He was equally successful with students of all levels of knowledge and abilities. He was also helping other tutors and teachers. Many of his formal students agree that he was one of few the best tutors.

The video lessons are original (without any changes) tutorial lessons of this tutor that he used to teach his students. His strong focus is on how to solve questions. However, his teaching philosophy is not to build up students’ knowledge by examples but, also not to go very deep in mathematical theory. In fact, he is giving theory just enough (almost in forms of notes) that everyone can get solid understanding of the topic. His stronger focus is on understanding of concepts in mathematics and how to apply them correctly and how to get right idea to solve particular question. He is using almost 1000 questions that he is working out on white board explaining to students techniques of how to apply theory and concepts on solving questions. He is repeating those techniques from question to question so that students who couldn’t get understanding at the beginning they can make it up in solving later questions, very often on questions from different chapters. This is, actually, permanent revision throughout the entire course. However, the most important fact of his tutoring success is coming from his purposely designed questions.

Questions, purposely created for those lessons, are based on students’ commonly asked questions modified by adding other aspects of the subject such as plenty algebra, application of mathematical theory and development of mathematical concepts and all this with strong focus on tests and exam requirements. Since commonly asked student’s questions are questions from large diversity of student’s textbooks, teacher edition material, past tests, SACs and exams then, in each lesson there is a wide range of different style of questions. That difference of style of questions is helping students to learn mathematics with deeper understanding of theory and concepts that can be applied across the whole range of questions, rather than trying to apply some memorized patterns that usually can work only on some certain questions. Having this tutoring, students will no longer say “I have never seen that type of question” when doing their homework, tests, and exams, as they will adopt working with different styles of questions.

About tutorial textbooks

Tutorial textbooks are written by the same author and their contents is the same as contents (questions) of video tutorial lessons Books are written version of actual, over 35 years, proven tutoring sessions held by the same tutor at tutoring centres or student’s home. These lessons are fully compatible to school curriculum and they enable top marks students to aim a perfect score as well as for those struggling in Maths, to aim above average (even top) marks and start enjoying in studying Maths. Some of important features of those books are:

  • Between 360 and 450 pages (depending of year level)
  • Over 1000 specifically created study and exam style questions per each book
  • Fully worked out solutions to each question with written explanation of theory and concepts for each step of the question
  • Answers to the most commonly asked questions by students.
  • The best resource for doing homework, SACs and exam
  • Revision throughout each lesson
  • The best reference material for final exam

Why are those books and video lessons different from other mathematics books and video lessons?

  1. Tutorial purpose

Firstly, those books are designed for tutorial purpose and written by a tutor with over 35 years of tutoring experience with an outstanding tutoring success in Victoria and internationally. So, the author has full understanding of what every individual student needs, to learn Mathematics on easier way and to gain excellent knowledge of Mathematical principles and by that to achieve an excellent mark. While most of the other books (good books) are effective with help of a teacher or tutor, those books don’t require any extra help. This author has a way to concisely explain mathematics to a wide range of different student levels of knowledge, abilities and their personal needs. The purpose of those books is to satisfy need of those looking for tutoring in either case; to catch up missing knowledge or to advance their knowledge to the highest standard.

  1. Fully worked out all questions

Second important difference is that author worked out all questions (over 1000 questions in each book). Furthermore, that work is highly supported by worded explanation of theory and concepts applied and, especially, algebra technique used for each step. Finally, the author (whenever is appropriate) presents commonly made mistakes by students with comprehensive explanation of why those mistakes are happening and how to avoid them.

  1. Purposely formulated questions

However, one of probably, the most important differences is purposely created questions. Questions in those books (and videos) are coming from commonly asked student’s questions. However, questions in these books are not simple collection of student’s questions. To provide students with all subject requirements the author created questions by modifying and adding to commonly asked student’s questions other mathematical aspects such as: plenty algebra, application of mathematical theory and development of mathematical concepts and all this with strong focus on tests and exam requirements. Since commonly asked student’s questions are questions from large diversity of student’s textbooks, teacher edition material, past tests, SACs and exams so, the questions in those books are fully compatible with that diversity. Finally, the wide range of different style of questions is helping students to learn mathematics with deeper understanding of theory and concepts that can be applied across the whole range of questions, rather than trying to apply some memorized patterns that usually can work only on some certain questions.

So, questions are formulated on a such way that satisfy all students’ needs for tutoring such as:

  • To fill the gap between school classroom work and exam requirements
  • To find answers to most of their questions
  • To understand mathematical concepts and theory and how to apply them on specific mathematical problems.
  • To rise their algebra skills.
  • To adopt to exam style of questions
  • To show their deeper knowledge and understanding of mathematics by working out question (to show what their examiner wants to see from them).

The following recourses were used for creating questions for those books and video lessons:

  • Questions asked by students
  • Questions from past exams, tests and assessments
  • Questions from student’s textbooks from different authors and publishers
  • Questions from teacher’s resources
  • Questions from other mathematical and scientific books

The author has worked on each chosen question from those resources and by changing original formulation he created completely new question that satisfy above needs. Also, complexity level was set on upper limit of student’s capability to follow working out and explaining the question. The high volume of questions with broad range of complexity makes those books and video lessons suitable for all levels of students’ knowledge (from those straggling to stay in subject to those aiming perfect mark and further advancing). Finally, questions are not arranged according to level of complexity. In fact, questions are presented in random arrangement so that students can’t identify quickly their level and they should try to follow all questions. This tactic enables students to move forward their potential in the subject.

In conclusion. While questions are presented in a random order, theory and concepts are evaluated in a smoothly increasing level of complexity. So, strong focus is on how to solve questions but, not to build up students’ knowledge by examples. Even though books are not going very deep in mathematical theory but, still giving theory just enough (almost in forms of notes) that everyone can get solid understanding of mathematical principles. Strong focus on understanding of concepts in mathematics and how to apply them correctly, especially on exam style of questions, makes this material to be “concept based and exam oriented”

Concept Based and Exam Oriented Tutoring

Being in tutoring for so long time (Mathematics and Chemistry) and thanks to our dedicated tutors for other subject, we didn’t just teach students, but we also learned from our students. We learned about their major and most common problems in their studying activities and we identified 4 major categories of those problems.

  1. Lack of theoretical knowledge.
  2. Pure concept or no concept at all for solving the question.
  3. Very low and inadequate foundation, and
  4. Inability to dial with different style of questions.

So, we realised that just helping students to solve some questions, it is not right tutoring as all of the above problems still leaving to students. Instead, we developed different tutoring approach that will eliminate or at least, significantly reduce all of mentioned student’s problems. That is concept based and exam oriented tutoring.

Why concept based and exam oriented? What is happening with theoretical knowledge and foundation?  Firstly, having a right concept (idea) on how to do something is more than half of the job. Secondly, teachers in schools are usually showing to students a few worked examples and don’t have time to explain concept as the contest of the subject is very demanding and they are time limited to finish the course. So, we realise that tutoring should fill that gap. On the other hand, for setting up a clear concept, the theoretical knowledge is ultimately needed. So those two categories closely relate to each other. So, when we are talking about concept based tutoring, we understand theoretical knowledge and concept together. It is obvious that term “concept” means one complex process of thinking that often confuses students and they are trying to avoid it. Such approach leads to hard and ineffective work which is, unfortunately, supported by many tutors and schoolteachers. Our tutoring strategy is to split concept (that “complex process of thinking”) into simple steps (simpler concepts) in a logical order that will give to students full and comprehensive understanding of the entire topic (chapter), yet on one easy way that students will like it.

Of course, we didn’t forget to improve student’s foundation skills. In fact, we developed tutoring questions so that each question requires solid foundation knowledge. Going through a large number of questions, students are improving session by session their foundation without interruption of what they currently studying.

Our tutoring is also exam oriented as everybody’s knowledge will be assessed on exam. That is why our tutoring will present to students all examination requirements and to help students to adapt to style of questions they may expect on their exams. Students will learn how to read questions correctly, how to set right strategy for working out the question, how to identify the knowledge needed to solve the particular question, how to start working out the question, how to present their knowledge to examiner, how to clear express their ideas and how to express answers correctly. Student will also learn how to understand differently formulated questions, how to handle work with different notation and many other examination aspects. Working on those issues students will not say anymore “I have never saw that type of questions” after their exams.

In conclusion: our concept based, and exam oriented tutoring is working together with each student to improve his/her knowledge and exam performance from the very basics to the most complex requirements. In doing that our strong focus is on filling the school and independent learning gaps. Even though, we were successful for so many years, we are still learning from our students and we will continue our progress in years to come.
